In Year 1 children are taught by Ms Moore and Miss Coode. They are supported by Ms Hurley and Ms Wani.
Reading and Phonics
Reading is an important part of daily life at our school and children are encouraged to read from a young age. In Year one, children continue to take home 2 levelled reading books per week. Daily delivery of the Letters and Sounds synthetic phonics programme continues throughout Year 1.
We are often asked which reading scheme we use with our children. As children learn to read, we believe it is important that children develop a range of skills and do not just read by sounding out each word. For this reason, we use age and stage appropriate books from a range of reading schemes. These include but are not limited to; Oxford Reading Tree, PM+ and Ginn. As the children's reading skills develop, they will advance from our reading schemes to the Accelerated Reader programme. This usually happens towards the end of Year 2.
