Charity Work and Links at Princess Frederica

Intentions
It is important that children realise the importance of giving when we have the opportunity to do so and the reasons why we do this. The function of charities is now a key component within a democracy and their role is evident in daily like on a global scale, in the United Kingdom and locally to the school. Our intention is that children understand why charities have become a part of society, why it is important they are supported in their work and what the benefits for others might be our support of them. The key is a developing understanding of charities rather than an acceptance that charities are what organisations that we give money to without thought to what they are achieving. It is also about understanding that being charitable and helping others isn't just about giving money or material objects but rather there is also being charitable with our time and that helping others is about emotional well-being as much as financial and physical well-being.

Implementation
In order for children to develop an understanding of charity, there are a number of ways the school approaches work it does around implementing its intentions. These include but are not limited to:
  • Lessons throughout the year as part of the PSHCE curriculum on the function of charity. Some of this will be carried out in class and some lessons covered in assemblies.
  • Religious stories as well everyday stories support children’s understanding of the importance of sharing and giving along and the fulfilment that comes with these acts of kindness.
  • School council setting the agenda on which charities to support. This will be carried out through a democratic process involving the children they represent.
  • The school council involved with visiting charities selected to support.
  • The school involved with working with other organisations in the local area to provide emotional joy through charitable contributions our time. An example of this is sharing stories and singing at a local old people's home.
  • Feedback to children and parents/carers on what the impact has been on contributions made to different charities.
  • Feedback in newsletters on money raised through different charities.
  • Supporting the aspirational work of individual children who wish to start their own charity with a clear intention. This will be something that significant work is done outside of school but with support of the school.
Impact
  • By the end of Key Stage 1, children are aware of the importance of giving and how different people have different lives and different challenges.
  • Children understand how it feels to share and give, what it means to others and the fulfilment that comes with these acts.
  • Children are aware of the important role that charities play within democracy.
  • Children understand some of the issues facing the people living in the local area of where the school is, issues within the country and global issues.
  • Children understand that being charitable is about identifying the need of those around us and that giving money to support a cause is just one way of being charitable.

1 Corinthians 13:
If I speak with the tongues of men, and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And if I should have prophecy and should know all mysteries, and all knowledge, and if I should have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And if I should distribute all my goods to feed the poor, and if I should deliver my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity is patient, is kind: charity envieth not, dealeth not perversely; is not puffed up; Is not ambitious, seeketh not her own, is not provoked to anger, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth with the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never falleth away: whether prophecies shall be made void, or tongues shall cease, or knowledge shall be destroyed. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, that which is in part shall be done away.
