Art Week 2017 at Princess Frederica
Please find below information on what the children did during art week in each year group and some pictures.
Nursery
Reception
In foundation stage we have chose to work on the topic of Europe. The art work we have been doing represents our chosen countries in Europe: Poland, France, Ireland, England and the Netherlands. On Monday we talked about Poland and discussed what colours are on the Polish flag. We also looked at a video clip of the traditional dances and listened to some Polish music. We noticed that the girls wore flower crowns and red beaded necklaces, when dancing and these were some of the activities for that day. On Tuesday we talked about France and had a French lesson with Madame Lee. She spoke about the Eiffel Tower and Henri Matisse with the children. The children made both clay and straw Eiffel towers which they loved creating. We were very lucky to have the opportunity to try some French baguettes with butter, which went down an absolute treat!!!! Wednesday, brought Ireland, where we looked at two different types of dance – traditional Irish and Sean Nos dancing which some of the children tried to recreate on the carpet after the activities had finished. We also had some instrumental Irish music playing in the background when making paper plate leprechauns, beaded shamrocks, Irish harps and St.Brigid crosses – all iconic Irish symbols. Thursday we focused on England, our home country. The children really enjoyed doing all the activities set out – we made a group Big Ben, the Queens crown on a ‘pillow’, London Buses, St.George’s Flag and the Queens Guards. The children drew on prior learning of where the Queen lives, with some children having visited Buckingham Palace being able to share their experience with their peers. The Netherlands was our final European destination so we made paper cup windmills, paper tulips (national flower), and clay clogs among other activities. We also talked about the artist Van Gogh having a look at some of his paintings and recreated his famous ‘Sunflowers’.
Year 1
In year 1, for art week we have been learning about the continent of Antarctica. We have looked at what animals live there and what it looks like. We have enjoyed many different activities such as making paper mache igloos, group collage, mosaic penguins and painting the aurora skies. We really enjoyed sculpturing our own Emperor penguins out of clay and have produced some amazing work.

Year 3 Canberra
When it’s Art week, every afternoon we do Art. In each year we have a topic. In year 3 it’s the continent Asia. On Monday we wrote a school value in Chinese, and drew our own dragons. Then on Tuesday, we made Japanese fish. A Bollywood teacher came in on Wednesday, after we drew and got our own henna. The Bollywood dancing video might be shown to the school, if it’s good enough. Finally we made a MASSIVE Chinese dragon using gold pen, and tissue paper. Don’t tell me off reader for terrible jokes, but the gluing sure was a sticky situation. George Main Sin |
During Art Week, year 3 Australia explored the rich traditions of Asia. First, we travelled to China and learnt about hànzì, or traditional Chinese symbols. We found out how to read and write some special words and later drew the symbols that represent the school values in red and gold. We also learnt about Chinese New Year and made a huge, colourful Chinese dragon as a class. Later in the week, we travelled to Japan and found out about Children’s Day, which is a national holiday celebrated annually. In honour of this special day, we made Koinobori. These are koi carp decorations which are hung outside homes in Japan to bring good luck. One of the best parts of the week was when we explored India. We created our own henna designs, wore bindis and even learnt a Bollywood dance! Art week was exciting, interesting and lots of fun and we can’t wait until next year!

Year 4
Year 4 focused on North America. We made full sized teepees in each class. All the children also enjoyed creating dream catchers and dream boxes. Much fun was had by all, even the adults sewing the teepees. Children were very enthusiastic and keen to use their creative skills. We also wrote native North American based stories and made them into books.
Year 5
Art week was a huge success in year 5 as we created art work in the style of our chosen continent: Australasia. The students used indigenous Australian dot-art techniques to recreate the “Hollow log Coffin” exhibition on large pieces of timber that will be mounted in the embankment. They learnt about the New Zealand Maori's traditions, as they painted each other's face masks and performed the ‘Haka’. The children worked really well together and produced some wonderful art work that will be on display at school for many years to come.
